Office design has come a long way in the last few years, let alone the last decade. From the results of pandemic lockdowns, the increase of technology and virtual requirements, and the general focus on a more inclusive work culture, office design trends have adapted to suit a wide variety of individuals and needs.

Technology and Collaboration

Whether your business is fully inoffice, hybrid, or remote, office designs need to consider high tech offerings to conduct business. Since the pandemic, we’ve seen a rise in virtual conferencing, in lieu of face to face meetings. While direct personal connection is great, we’ve experienced major benefits from incorporating high tech components like increased productivity, flexibility, and the widening of service areas.

Businesses thinking about a new or updated office should consider things like:

  • Smart office technologies and furniture
  • Plan for current and future connectivity needs
  • Create meeting spaces armed with audio/visual components to maximize productivity of in-person and virtual meetings.

Having multiple collaborative or “dynamic” workspaces are trending, and we don’t think are going anywhere. The desire to collaborate in small groups either planned or impromptu will benefit from:

  • Small breakout areas for either sitting or standing.
  • Noise Control for the workspaces nearby

Health and Wellness

Research shows bringing health and wellness into the office environment drastically improves individuals’ productivity, health, and attitudes. Multiple certifying agencies are bringing awareness, research, and standards to well office design (like the International WELL Building Institute) for designers and business owners to incorporate. Some of these standards include:

  • Active Workplace w/ Ergonomic Design
  • Sustainability/Nature (Biophilic Design)
  • Safe, Protected Workspace
  • Natural Lighting, Cleaner Air, Purified Water
  • Sustainable / Energy-Saving Systems

Culture and Style

The idea of “third place” as office design is creating a workplace that is a blend of home and office. The third place as a workplace helps promote a company’s culture, employee retention, and reputation while also supporting business goals.

Incorporating cultural elements, aesthetic enhancements, and quality furniture and products are all ways to boost employee’s experience in the workplace, which in turn can boost work product. Some features include:

  • Incorporating private spaces like privacy pods/booths
  • Creating a home-like work environment by including a library, lounge, café, gym, and full bathrooms
  • Consider texture and natural elements in your finishes and wall coverings.
  • Offer opportunities for outdoor amenities and movement like green spaces and outdoor seating.
  • Promote your business mission and culture through bold graphics and branding.

BB: I think that like most things, trends will ebb and flow. I don’t think there’s anything that will go away forever.

Question: Are there any office design concepts owners always need to think about?

BB:  In today’s day and age: Technology and Connectivity should be at the forefront of any office design conversation.

Question: What do you love to incorporate in office design?

BB: I love to look at ways to introduce nature, biophilia and sustainability.  As someone who loves being outdoors, there’s a soothing effect nature brings to the work environment.
