Carpenter and Paterson Expansion
Woodward delivers design and construction services to expand Carpenter and Paterson’s business operations.
This design-build expansion represented far more than added square footage—it was an opportunity for Carpenter & Paterson to redefine their identity and create a facility that reflects both their history and their forward momentum. The project expanded the company’s manufacturing operations while rebranding the site with a clean, contemporary image that speaks to innovation, precision, and pride in craftsmanship.
From the earliest stages, Woodward’s integrated team of architects, engineers, and builders collaborated closely with the owner to align design intent with operational needs. The new facility serves as a bridge between the company’s industrial production and its professional identity. A refined architectural façade screens the manufacturing area from view, revealing instead a welcoming green space that introduces visitors to the renewed campus. This thoughtful arrangement sets the tone for the entire experience—one that unites function, brand, and user comfort.
Upon arrival, guests are greeted by a broad expanse of landscaped open space and an entry sequence that immediately conveys a sense of place and pride. Inside, the vestibule features a vibrant accent wall displaying the Carpenter & Paterson logo, hinting at the energy and craftsmanship that define the company’s work. The heart of the project lies in the viewing area—a light-filled communal space where employees and visitors can gather, recharge, and observe the manufacturing floor in motion. Less a conference room and more a family table, it embodies the company’s collaborative culture.
Light and materiality were key drivers in shaping the experience. The warehouse is clad in a two-tone, mini-rib metal panel system—a refined alternative to the typical R-panel found on industrial buildings—giving the exterior a polished, durable character. Large storefront windows invite generous north light into the offices, connecting occupants with the surrounding landscape while maintaining visual comfort. The difference in height between the warehouse and office volumes created an opportunity for a continuous clerestory, bringing natural light deep into the work areas and improving ventilation throughout the day.
Even the most practical design gestures were executed with care. Gutters cast directly into the concrete paving carry rainwater away from the building and beneath the sidewalk—a subtle but elegant solution that both celebrates the natural movement of water and ensures long-term protection of the structure.
Perhaps most rewarding is seeing the building embraced by the people who will use it every day. Carpenter & Paterson employees followed the design and construction process from start to finish, and their enthusiasm as the facility came together was remarkable. Their pride in occupying the new space affirms the project’s success—not just as an expansion, but as a true reflection of their company’s identity and future.
